Southern's Engineering Alumni Society exists to support and enhance the legacy of Southern University and A&M College's engineering program. We provide our time, talents, and treasures for its upliftment.
Mission
Support and enhance the legacy
SEAS mobilizes Southern University engineering alumni to strengthen the College of Engineering: funding scholarships, mentoring students, recruiting the next cohort, and connecting the program to industry partners who hire our graduates.
We are alumni-led and volunteer-driven. Every committee — recruiting, scholarship, engagement and outreach, partnerships, and fundraising — is powered by graduates who know what a Southern engineering degree makes possible.
Vision
The #1 producer of Black engineers, again
We have developed and are promoting a proactive approach to return Southern University's engineering program to preeminence: once again the #1 producer of Black engineers by 2031, starting by doubling the number of engineering graduates.
History & legacy
Honoring our legacy
We honor the Southern University engineering legacy and the legacy of our first two deans, John Joe Thurman and Guy Burrell, who presided over the College of Engineering for its first 31 years, 1956–1987.
Their leadership guided the program from inception to becoming the number one producer of Black engineers from 1978 to 1990. At its peak, Southern’s College of Engineering graduated 300+ underrepresented minority students in a single year — a feat that is still unmatched.
More than 6,000 engineers have graduated from Southern since 1956. The work now is continuing that legacy.
